Slash your energy bills by installing new windows
We’ve helped over 500,000 homeowners reduce their carbon footprint
Windows are considered to be an essential part of a household given their enormous impact on energy bills, insulation and overall quality of life. For this reason, it is also important to consider purchasing a new set of windows or perhaps a window replacement.
For instance, installing double glazing with uPVC frames throughout an average 3 bedroom house could cost between £3,000 to £5,000. In this guide, we’ll take you through the most important cost-related factors you’ll need to consider whenever it becomes time to replace your windows.
Window supply costs are mainly decided by the size, style, and material of your windows. Whereas, installation costs include the costs of removing your old window, and then fitting the new frame and the new glass. In general, this will likely cost an additional £300, but this will increase the more windows you’re working on.
Installation rates also vary based on the company you choose to work with. One of the best ways to keep the overall new windows costs down is by receiving multiple installer quotes before deciding on one company to work for. This way, you can compare offers and choose the one that offers a good deal.
It’s important that you only compare quotes from the most reputable companies that will offer quality products and services. To avoid spending too much time looking into the background of lots of different companies, why not leave it to us at GreenMatch?
Simply by filling in our form, we can find up to 4 of the best installers operating in your region. They will then offer you their tailored quotes, which you can compare and choose between. All of the installers in our wide network are vetted by us and FENSA qualified.
Our service is completely free and you’re under no obligation to accept any of the quotes you receive. Get started today by clicking the button below.

This table shows the average cost per double glazed window depending on the type of frame material you choose and the size of the window. It is important to note that these price ranges are provided to give an indication of price and actual window installation quotes may vary.

Installing double glazing with uPVC frames throughout an average 3 bedroom house could cost between £3,000 to £5,000. It’s always best to consult a professional installer who will consider the style, size and type of windows you’re looking for. Triple glazing will add around 30% to the cost and opting for aluminium or timber frames will be more expensive again adding between 30-50% to the price.
uPVC window frames are generally the lowest cost option. Composite window frames (a combination of timber and aluminium or steel) are often the most expensive type of frame to install.
In terms of design, casement style windows are usually the most affordable option ventilation option. Picture window costs are usually lower but they are static windows that can’t be opened so they can lack functionality. Whereas, sash windows are often the most expensive to install.
Additional costs might include speciality glazing (low-E, self-cleaning, toughened) or any extra security features.
The company you choose to install your new windows, its size, and its location (relative to yours) will also have considerable bearings over final total costs. This is why we recommend comparing multiple quotes from at least 2 or 3 companies so you can find out where the best value for money is. Get free window quotes from local and national installers now.
The material you choose for your window frames will have a significant impact on the cost. We’ve put together some average prices for the supply and installation of windows by material to give you an indication of the difference in price you are looking at.
uPVC windows are generally the lowest cost option but this doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not the right choice for your home.
High-quality uPVC frames are highly thermally efficient and long lasting. They are also easy to maintain with an occasional wipe down being all that’s needed to keep them looking their best. However, poor quality uPVC can warp over time so the absolute cheapest you can find may not be the best long term investment for your home.

Timber frames are the most costly option but can add real value to your home, especially if you are conscious about the overall aesthetics. Timber windows provide a classic and elegant finish and are perfect if your home is of a particular period. It is possible to find cheap wooden window prices online, although you should ensure you are buying quality windows from a reputable installer.
Timber frames are available in either hardwood or softwood and in a range of finishes. It’s worth remembering that, in addition to their higher cost, they also require more ongoing maintenance than uPVC or aluminium.

When taking the measurements for your new windows remember to do so in millimetres (mm). Where possible you will need to measure the aperture or brickwork opening on the outside of your property.
You should also take measurements of the height and width from three different places- the left side, right side, and centre. Then use the smallest measurement for both dimensions to account for any natural expansion from hot weather.
Any windows above the ground floor will cost more to replace as the window fitter will need to use scaffolding to access them. It’s possible that a company may offer a discount if you need more than 5 windows so if you’re having a total overhaul remember to ask the question!
Not sure how to measure your windows correctly? Take a look at our step by step guide to measuring your old windows for replacement.

Double glazing prices sit at around £350 – £600 per window. However, double glazing prices will vary from installation to installation and will depend on:
Thanks to being an effective insulator, double glazing will help to keep your home warmer and reduce outdoor noise, double glazing is well worth the investment. The Energy Saving Trust found that typical gas heated homes across England, Scotland and Wales could be saving up to £195 a year – just by having A+ double glazing installed.
If the cost of double glazing isn’t a realistic option for you, perhaps because of the costs or because you live in a protected property, then secondary glazing could be the solution.
This involves adding a second pane of glass to single glazing which is fitted on the inside of the window. It’s a cheaper choice and will reduce the heat loss and noise pollution associated with single glazing. However, ultimately it’s not as effective as double glazing.
Before you begin inviting tradespeople or salespeople into your home it’s a very good idea to do your own research. Take a look around at the options on the market, ask friends and family for recommendations and possibly even neighbours with similar homes if they’ve had new windows installed recently. This will give you a great foundation so that you can give them a clear steer from the start as to what you’re looking for in terms of frame materials and style of windows.
To provide accurate quotes for your new windows the sales representative or tradesperson will need to visit your home. Don’t let any trader pressure you to agree to a quote based on ‘today only prices’. Hard sell tactics are usually an indication of poor quality products and services.
The same can also be said for especially low installation rates. As a rule of thumb, if their rates seem too good to be true, they probably are! That’s another reason why comparing quotes is preferable since you’ll get a sense for what the most accurate installation rates are.
A reputable company will provide their best quote and leave you to consider it. They should also be registered with FENSA or the GGF.
You can also assess their professionalism by how many years experience they have, as well as checking out customer reviews and testimonials.
When getting quotes for your new windows, the total price quoted by each installer should include:
We advise you to get as many quotes as you can but it’s really important that you compare more than a single quote to be sure you’re getting a competitive price. A very good tactic is to consider quotes from both a leading installer like Everest, Anglian or Safestyle against a local, independent window fitter. Remember to compare a like for like service so you can see the difference in window prices and ask specific questions.
